Right Time to Euthanize Your Dog

It is natural to feel the loss and be sad when somebody leaves us forever. In such situations we cry and express our grief and sorrow. Same is the case when our dog passes away. It may be his natural death or a forced death due to euthanizing. It is a very difficult decision to give death to the one we’ve loved and adored as a family member. He may have been with us for a very short span of time but the bonding is still very strong due to his unconditional love. You would feel guilty and helpless in the situation when you’d hate to take such heartless decision. But may be this is the best thing you can do to relieve him from pain and suffering.

There are various factors to be kept in mind to judge the right time to euthanize your dog. The realistic factors among all are the pet’s unbearable and untreatable suffering, the emotional suffering of your pet and the unfortunate harsh reality of your financial disability. It is best to sit separately and take into account all these factors that would help you decide what should be the right step for your pet. No doubt every dog has the right to die naturally taking his own time but prolonged decision may make the speechless creature grieve more in unbearable pain.

Ask yourself a few questions and you’ll be out of your dilemma regarding euthanizing your pet or not. Ask:

  • What is the state of improvement in your pet’s condition?
  • Is he gay and happy as before?
  • Is he pleading for relief?
  • Is he in pain?
  • Is he tired and withdrawn all the time?
  • Is he same towards you?
  • Is there any treatment available for him yet?

Put yourself in your pet’s condition helpless and suffering. Although veterinary science has made many advancements in the treatments of dogs but still there are a few times when there seems no hope. It is then your duty to free your dog of all pain. If after considering all the factors you feel euthanizing is the right decision you should leave all the guilt aside and tell your vet to bring your pet at peace.

Take your vet’s advice if there is any hope of survival of your pet. Consider his words seriously. Take a mutual decision with your family and you’ll know the right time to release your dog of all pain and suffering.
