Neapolis, Lassithi – Crete Island in Greece

You’ll find the beautiful village of Neapolis in Lassithi just off the National Road from Herakio to Aghios Nicolas. It is situated amidst the lush green valley of olive trees and vegetable gardens. Your senses will really feel relaxed as you come in this soothing and marvelous town. It has about 2,800 permanent residents dwelling here.

It is well known for the archaeological sites and various upcoming discoveries brought infront by recent excavations. At about 3 kms fromNeapolis upon the hill of Aghios Antonios you’ll see the interesting ruins of the ancient Doric City of Deros. The temple of Apollo Delphinios is the result of the findings of the excavations recently. It is said to be dated as back as 8th century B.C. Other interesting discoveries are those of the divine statues – one of man and two of the women. These are now displayed in the Heraklio Museum. One of the most important findings is of the inscribed stone from the ancient city with the oath of 180 adolescents of the city. There are several other archaeological collections of Crete life found all over the town comprising statues, coins, art work and items from the everyday life of the people of Neapolis, Lassithi and nearby areas.

Neapolis, Lassithi, Crete Island in Greece is a beautiful town and offers great archaeological sites and churches to its visitors. Apart from the various finding the town also has several fabulous Monasteries and churches scattered at every corner. There are numerous small villages nearby which can be reached strolling by the town. You can just have a good stroll while admiring the beauty of the tiny neighborhood villages as Nikithianos, Choumerlakos, Limnes and many others. Neapolis has a wonderful Folk Museum which you must make a visit at. Here you’ll find several ancient local things at display presenting the real look of the village in past. A few of these are the traditional vessels and utensils, wooden carved handicrafts and the items of daily usage.

You can also access the beach of Milatos situated at about 13 km from Neapolis towards the North. It is ideal for swimming and various other water activities. You can also just sit and relax at the beach side and enjoy its peace and calm. If you happen to visit the town during summer season you’ll be able to attend various local feasts – Panighyri. It is celebrated on the 15th of August in the honour of Assumption of Virgin Mary. It is the time to enjoy with the locals wherein they dance, sing and amuse themselves to the full.

You can easily reach Neapolis in Lassithi by public buses running after short intervals. You can also have the service of taxi as well as rented motorbikes to go through the village comfortably. You have abundant accommodation provisions in the village as luxurious hotels, rooms to let and various traditional apartments. You can also book the self catering apartments and small pensions as per your need. Food is also no problem here and you can enjoy the special local dishes at several taverns and cafes in the area. A small airport is also available but the fights are available from Sitia only during summer time to and from the village.
