Many of us do some form of goal setting just before or at the start of a new year. It is the time when we reflect how far we have progressed and what to do next. However, goal setting should not merely be short term targets or with a one-year time frame. In fact, goals should be set based on the vision of what you want to achieve in life.
When you have a vision, you know what directions you have to take. Making decisions will be a whole lot easier, when you are guided by it. When you have a vision, you will feel motivated to make your dreams a reality.
It used to be that I will make one-year goal setting targets. Although I had a general idea of where I want to go, I did not put much thought into creating a vision. So along the way, I have found myself getting side tracked, losing interest and even changing my goals often. It was confusing when I was presented with many choices. Not having a vision has meant that I made many costly mistakes.
Frustrated with my poor progress, I set about finding out more about goal setting. From the numerous books and workshops that I have attended, here is what I found out.
Goal setting is a “what” statement; that is, what to do. It is not a “why” statement. However, if you know the purpose or the “why” you are doing something, your “whats” have a force on their own. You can have several hundred goals but you may only have a single purpose that you spend your life working for. The purpose forms your vision. You can then break down your goals into action-oriented daily, monthly or yearly tasks (which form the “hows” to get there).
Elements of a vision statement should include the following:
· Clarity and lack of ambiguity.
· Painting a vivid and clear picture.
· Describing a bright future.
· Memorable and engaging.
Here are some examples of vision. Disney’s vision is “To make people happy.” For some, their purpose is simply “To serve”. I have a vision too. My vision is to “educate and empower in the area of self healing and self fulfilment”.
When you have a clear vision, it is amazing the amount of things you can achieve and how strong your determination is, in order to make it a reality.
Internalize your vision by writing it down and putting this piece of paper where you can clearly see it everyday. Then, set about writing down your daily, monthly or yearly goals in order to achieve this vision.
At times, you may feel daunted by your lack of progress or feel disheartened by the obstacles that are thrown in your path. Hence it is important that you do not lose sight of your vision. If others can succeed in spite of all difficulties, so can you.
It does not matter if you think that it is difficult to achieve your vision at this point in time. Heard of the saying “Don’t catch the paralysis of perfection?” You may not have the answers on how to get there. But you can start by making a commitment to your vision and take a step each day towards it. Have the trust that everything will work out.
Start opening up your mind to the possibilities of what may be possible. “To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe” — Anatole Franc.
Make a plan to inspire like-minded people to get involved. Also, make it a point to get to know like-minded friends who are on the same journey as you. Just think about the joy when you finally realise your vision and being able to share with everyone with the same vision.
It is better to create a future you love than to endure the one that you do not. Look beyond goal setting. Think about creating a vision. You may not be able to come up with one in an instant. Creating a vision requires careful thought, personal insights, and you may also need to engage your subconscious mind for some answers. Then, when you have decided on a vision that inspires you, go for it with all your heart and soul. As you start your journey with belief, opportunities will come along to help make your dreams a reality.
