It is indeed true that even dogs are like human beings. There may be times when even they fall sick. Dogs also are subject to different kinds of diseases and illnesses. In such a situation you may need to take your dog to a vet for a proper treatment. This process may even need you pet to stay at the clinic for a few days and the vet may otherwise prescribe some medication for your dog.
Whether accepted or not, it is a fact that medicines for both human beings and dogs are always bitter in taste. When it comes to giving your dog a particular medication it is a real struggle because dogs are all the more notoriously suspicious. This factor suspicion is because dogs have the acute sense of smell!! Giving medication to your dog is indeed very difficult. Though we are trying to help them get rid of their disease, poor dogs will not be able to understand that. They always look at such efforts with utter disdain.
Despite all these difficulties, there are yet some dogs which are not that bad with taking their tablets. With certain dogs, it is very simple to open their mouth and just drop the tablet in and again hold their mount closed for a while so that the medicine goes into their tummy. And, if the table is too bitter in its taste, then coating the same with some cream or any other similar items may help handle the situation in an easy way.
There are yet certain dogs which are totally free of any kind of diseases, continuously for many years. But it may be necessary to give some kind of preventive medication to dogs, however healthy they are and this task may be a real fuss with some dogs.
Dog owners try to give medication to even such fussy dogs in different methods. When we are trying to give them some sort of medication, dogs usually run away and hide in some corner of the house. Even tricks like coating the tablet with butter or some other tasty item will also be in vain. The other alternate of crushing the table and mixing it the dog food may also not work. This is because, as told earlier, dogs have the acute sense of smell!
The only way to handle such fussy dogs is to forcibly open its mouth and drop the medication right into its throat and hold the mouth closed for a few minutes until it swallows the medication. This task is indeed a real struggle. When an attempt is made to forcibly give the dog its medication, they may even try to push the medication with their tongue through the small gaps in between their teeth. Not only this, the dogs would generally try in all possible ways not to swallow the medication. Sometimes, giving a dog its medication by force may even take more that 10-15 minutes.
It would be better if dog owners attempt to give their dogs medication at a time which they feel lucky!!
