Watering Lawn
A healthy green lawn adds beauty and gives a soothing effect on the surroundings. In hot seasons the lawn also gives its coolness to the surroundings. Maintaining a lawn is a good hobby to ease your soul.
The maintenance of a lawn largely depends on the way you water it. It is one of the major points that have to be borne in mind, and for that a proper knowledge is required. Most of the people are unaware of the importance of their lawn. Some knowledge has to be acquired before you plan your lawn. That is the first step in having a great lawn. The type of grass you plant should depend on the climatic conditions of the region. If you wish to plant a grass that needs lot of water in desert areas then the water consumption may not be economically viable. Also if you are in rainy area and plant a grass that belongs to desert areas you need to be very specific regarding the quantity of water you need to add to your lawn.
It is a big misconception that if you add lot of water to your lawn, the lawn will turn lush green. The amount and time of water required by your lawn is different for different lawns and depends upon geographical location also. There are different phases of lawn growth. The lawn has the capability to survive draught season by slowing its growth rate and turning its color from green to brown. This process can be bypassed in dry season if you water the lawn efficiently. As a general rule a lawn needs around one inch of water per week. The cycle you want to choose should be decided before hand. You should not switch between the two cycles as it causes weakness of the grass roots and also make them prone to more diseases.
The time when the water should be applied to the lawn is also an important factor. The ideal time for watering the lawn in general case is during the early morning or during the evening. The lawn should not be watered in the afternoons and nights. If you water the lawn in the afternoon then the water in the grass may evaporate and lawn would not be able to absorb the water. Watering during the night can also be harmful as it increases the danger of grass diseases and pest growth. The temperature at night and moisture are favorable for growth of pest and grass diseases.
Just after plantation or applying fertilizers, avoid heavy watering of the lawn. Only add little amount of water to the lawn and distribute it evenly, so that the fertilizers do not wash away. The washed away fertilizers are not good for the lawn and also add to the pollution.
