Enhancing Communication in Marriage

Whether it is a big corporate house or a marriage, communication is the key to bringing harmony and happiness. Good communication between couples ensures that they build a strong relationship and base it on trust, honesty and respect for each other. Often unhappy couples are unhappy because if the fact that they have poor communication between them and they have not worked on their ability to listen and communicate.

Barriers of Communication

There are many barriers of communication that keep a couple from sharing what is on their mind and in their hearts:

·         Personal fears. That are generally deep-seated, a person could fear that if they reveal their true selves they won’t be loved.

·         Fearing to invite your partner’s anger or displeasure could often result in complacency.

·         Not taking the time and effort to give to your partner.

·         Fearing that you will hurt your partner with your words or actions.

·         Not knowing the factors of good communication.

In order to feed your communication channels it is necessary to empathize with your partner and accept them for what they are. Let us have a look at what you can do to open yourself to empathy, acceptance and enhance your communication skills.

Listen

You have heard this before, learn to listen. Active listening promotes a healthy environment for discussion, solution and growth. Communication is always a two-phase process and you must learn to listen to your partner before you talk. And listening to your partner also means listening to their body language as well as their verbal talk.

You also have to be able to show that you are genuinely interested in what your partner is saying for active listening like nodding your head from time to time or asking open-ended questions and encouraging your partner to speak because your lack of interest could simple result in your partner shutting their doors of communication. It does not mean that you agree with everything they are saying but it is important to listen and actually hear out your partner’s needs and fears, be it trivial or important.

Get into your partner’s shoes

Most fights between couples are trivial but if you fan this fire it will blow up to mega sized proportions. It is important to understand that each person has a different set of values, personality and past experiences that define their understanding of the present. If you are unable to understand how your partner thinks it is difficult to consider solving any issues you may have. If there is something you don’t understand, ask your partner for clarification and make sure you thoroughly understand their line of thought.

Balance honesty with kindness

We all love to hear a compliment from your partners. And it is a must to be able to say a few words to your partner of genuine affection and appreciation to give confidence your partner. It does not mean that you need to be dishonest or even that you are so honest as to hurt your partner’s feelings. Don’t be caught up in small hiccups that your partner can commit instead learn to look at the bigger picture.

With these things in mind, you can truly make your partner feel special and appreciated. Communicating to your partner is the most essential component for a healthy and stable marriage and the foundation of a strong future family.
